Blessing at the end of the fight Light and Dark have independent health bars, and if you kill one of them, the other vanishes but leaves behind some sort of buff relating to their element that will remain with you the rest of the game.īeyond that I also had the following idea Mini-boss Skadj - A gentle Jotun who will fight you only if you attack her, and that otherwise, through special puzzle condition or some other challenge completion, gives the player a buff that helps in the current level's boss fight. Using their power for their own demise Dark and Light have special attacks that are devastating and hard to dodge, but if you push your maneuvering skills, you can make the special attack hit the opposite Jotun for massive damage. Light and Dark have same health-bar one dies, the other crumbles in response. I thought up the following possibilities for this boss fight: Thinking about how to keep a distance between Jotun and player, and about the idea of the light/dark Jotun, I had an idea that perhaps one of the boss fights could be against 2 Jotun in one arena - light and dark as separate entities that, while perhaps smaller than other Jotun, create a challenge for the player by forcing them to split their attention. We really appreciate your feedback and ideas and truly believe that the only way Jotun can be a success is with your help! What other ways could we have of separating the player from the jotun?.What other elements do you imagine the jotun could be?.Of course, we'd love to get your feedback: This gives the jotun a way of showing off their different types of attacks involving terrain, range or AoE and makes movement, positioning and dodging much more important. We realized that to make the combats interesting we needed ways of separating the player from the jotun: either with knock-back attacks or by giving the jotun better movement abilities (charge, dash, teleport, etc). This made the gameplay kind of redundant and didn't allow the jotun's non-melee attacks to be very effective. This means that the player gets as close as possible to the jotun to attack it. One of the key takeaways from our first boss fight prototype was the consequences of Thora only having a melee attack. Here is a little peek at one of our brainstorm sessions: The final game will have at least 4 other bosses. It’s great fun exploring the maps and figuring out a boss’ attacks, though the combat can become tedious on occasion. We've brainstormed different ideas for the elements the jotun represent and we've already shown the Frost jotun quite a bit. Jotun: Valhalla Edition is a welcome addition to the Nintendo Switch library that brings with it Nordic mythology, a gorgeous hand-drawn art style, and difficult boss fights. We're planning on doing these towards the end of each month to give you an idea of what we've been up to and what's coming up! We hope you have been well over the last month.
